Dr. Rebecca Coberly

Soprano Rebecca Coberly is a frequent recitalist throughout the United States and internationally, and has appeared as soprano soloist in Poulenc’s Gloria with the Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus, and with the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus in their performance of Barber’s Prayers of Kierkegaard and Theofanidis’s The Here and Now. Other solo appearances include Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and performances of Handel’s Messiah in Ireland and Great Britain with the American Oratorio Chorus. She has performed and presented at regional and national College Music Society conferences, has been a frequent participant in the annual Music by Women Festival in Columbus, MS, and was invited to serve as a Master Teacher for the 8vo. Congreso Nacional of La Asociacion Mexicana de Maestros de Canto in Culiacan, MX. She holds degrees in voice from Northwestern University (BA) and the Rice University Shepherd School of Music (MM), and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Texas Tech University. She currently serves as Professor of Voice and Associate Director of the School of Music at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

María Ávalos

Mezzo-Soprano María Ávalos made her debut in New York City for the Giulio Gari Foundation in 2008.  She earns a Bachelor and Master Degree in Vocal Performance from The University of Texas at Brownsville and The University of Texas- Pan American.

She studied with Katherine Ciesinski, and Melanie Sonnenberg at the University of Houston -Moores School of Music. She has taken master classes with Ted Taylor from the Metropolitan Opera House and Maestro Franco Iglesias.

Her repertoire encompasses from Baroque to contemporary including Zarzuela and works by Latin American composers.

Permanent concert activities include: Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Contemporary Art Festival of León Guanajuato, Puebla International Festival, Tamaulipas International Festival, Teziutlán International Arts Festival, Sinaloa International University Festival, Puebla State Symphony Orchestra, Opera Galas with the San Luis Potosí Symphony Orchestra, Guadalajara Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as concerts for the Fr. Chopin Society in Texas, Musical Instruments Museum in Phoenix Arizona, McAllen Wind Ensemble, Valley Symphony Orchestra Anniversary Celebration, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Orchestra and permanent recitals for the Consulates of Mexico in USA and for the Rio Grande Foundation for the Performing Arts.

She has worked under the direction of: Jose Miramontes, Ivan Lopez Reynoso, Carl Seale, David Means, Joseph Eunkwan Choi and Fernando Lozano. In 2022, she performed in Spain, accompanied by her husband, pianist Francisco Rocafuerte. María Avalos is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the National Opera Association and is currently serves as Choral Director at PSJA ISD.
